27 Words Worth Fighting For
July 26, 2012 // 0 Comments“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
Those 27 words which make up the 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution are what ensure that the other amendments, known as the Bill of Rights are protected. Without the guarantee provided for by the 2nd Amendment, tyranny would be allowed to prevail and a free people would be no more.
Today, most people believe that the right to keep and bear arms means that their right to hunt, participate in shooting competitions and carry a firearm to protect oneself from bad guys is protected. While all of these things are surely the result of the 2nd Amendment, its real purpose is to ensure that a free people have the means necessary to defeat tyrants.
The recent tragedy in Colorado is just another example that illustrates the ignorance of the American people. The debate over whether or not to establish more stringent gun laws is again front and center in the news and the usual suspects are demagoging the issue yet again. This debate is senseless, just like the debate over whether or not we should ban cars because between 40 and 50 thousand people a year die in car accidents. Less guns will do nothing to deter crime, a fact that has been proven time and time and time again.
“I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them.” - George Mason
If you look at those politicians and media types who call for more gun control, and there are some who call for the complete ban of all firearms, you will find that they are the same people who are trying to tell the rest of us what is good for us. Michael Bloomberg, the Mayor of New York City is one of the biggest culprits. He again called for more gun control literally hours after the shooting in Colorado. He even went on to say that cops should go on strike until tougher guns laws are enacted. What he doesn’t know is the majority of local cops are pro 2nd Amendment and realize that more guns equals less crime. But why would Bloombeerg let the facts get in his way. And might I add that this is the same Michael Bloomberg who thinks he knows best what size soda you should be allowed to buy or whether or not you should be allowed to put salt on your food.
“Firearms stand next in importance to the constitution itself. They are the American people’s liberty teeth and keystone under independence … from the hour the Pilgrims landed to the present day, events, occurences and tendencies prove that to ensure peace security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable … the very atmosphere of firearms anywhere restrains evil interference — they deserve a place of honor with all that’s good.” – George Washington
I will admit that because of the presence of firearms in our society, there will be times in which evil people will do evil things with them. This incident in Colorado will not be the last, I am certain of that. There will also be more car accidents, but that doesn’t dissuade you from driving your car to work, or to the grocery store or to the gym. There is a risk associated with driving and you analyze and accept that risk or you sit at home watching Oprah reruns all day. There is a risk that you may some day be the target of one of those evil people with a gun, but the risk is worth it if the alternative is tyranny.
“Those who hammer their guns into plowshares will plow for those who do not.” – Thomas Jefferson
Obama and people like him would love nothing better than to rule over a disarmed society, but the presence of an armed resistance keeps him, and other would be tyrants in check. Imagine an unarmed American populace being ruled by a person like Obama. History has already shown us what that scenario would look like. I am not willing to give up my guns and trust that politicians both present and future will adhere to the Constitution.
“To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them.” – Richard Henry Lee
You will note that in every quote I have listed here from a Founding Father on the topic of the 2nd Amendment and arms, they talk of preserving freedom. Thats because the right to keep and bear arms is about preserving freedom and defeating tyranny. It is about the protection of free speech, and the freedom from illegal search and seizure and the freedom to worship as you see fit. The 2nd Amendment is about freedom from oppression and the right to be secure in ones own person and in ones home. In short, guns equal freedom.
I am deeply saddened by the loss of life as a result of the evil that was perpetrated in Colorado last week, and over the loss of life at the hands of bad people in possession of firearms. But we must remember that bad and evil people will do bad and evil things with or without firearms. The best and most effective way to stop this kind of thing in the future is to met force with equal force. Disarming law abiding citizens, like what was done in that movie theatre last Friday will not serve to stop evil things from happening.
The 27 words that comprise the 2nd Amendment where put there so that a free people could remain so. Would be tyrants both domestically and abroad fear and loath the 2nd Amendment for it restrains their evil tendencies.
If there was ever anything worth fighting for, it is those 27 words, the hallmark of freedom in America.
Sic Semper Tyrannis!
