Out of Touch – Just Sayin’

In March 27, 2008, George Will provided these two gems for a Real Clear Politics article titled “Conservatives More Liberal
Givers.”

  1. In the 10 reddest states, in which Bush got more than 60 percent majorities, the average percentage of personal income donated
to charity was 3.5.  Residents of the bluest states, which gave Bush less than 40 percent, donated just 1.9 percent.
  2. Although liberal families’ incomes average 6 percent higher than those of conservative families, conservative-headed households give, on average, 30 percent more to charity than the average liberal-headed household [my 2 cents: proving once again we conservatives are on the right side of the issue].

Now, contrast the following two comments from Thomas Jefferson, who Democrats claim as their party’s founder, and Senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett, the current version of the vanguard Democrat Party.  Jefferson “I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.”  But oh, wouldn’t Thomas
Jefferson be rolling in his grave now!  We have gone from Jefferson to this statement by Valerie Jarrett: “We are working hard to lift people out of poverty… that is what government is supposed to do.”  Has the Democrat Party done a complete 180 degree switch?  Apparently so!

But wait, there’s more!  The Federalist Party lost all ground to the Democrat Party because it was apparently ‘too elitist.’  Remember now that, on average, liberal families make about 6% more than conservative families and yet conservatives contribute 30% more to charity.  If conservatives family pull in $50,000 liberals are pulling in $53,000.  At the same time, liberal households are contributing $1007 to various charities while conservative families are giving $1,309.  Doing a little quick math, that means conservatives have $48,691 against the liberal $51,993, a $3,302 difference, or 6.8% above what conservatives bring in after charitable giving.  Excuse me, but don’t liberals portray themselves as the poor and oppressed?  If they get 6.8% more before taxes, I don’t think they should really make that claim.

In fact, liberals are expecting to spend over $1B (that’s billion) on next year’s presidential election.  Really?  Face it, they won’t get there with the type of campaign contributions you and I can afford.  They’ll get there through efforts from folks like Penny Pritzker, the Hyatt hotel chain heiress who can bring in $18M before she really gets started.  Where does that leave the average Joe?  Somewhere outside the party of
elite liberals.  I don’t know about you, but I think the Democrat Party has become the new elitist, out of touch with America.  Just sayin’.

About this contributor

Ben Franklin posted 12 articles on this blog.

Mr. Franklin was a Democrat in his early years, but the more he learned, the more he moved away from liberal ideals. He is now a staunch Christian conservative of the classical liberal school and takes joy in being a husband and father of four boys. He is one course from an MA in Law and Public Policy at Regent University's Robertson School of Government and two courses from a M.Ed at Regent University's School of Educaiton. While not a libertarian, Ben believes government often usurps family and community responsibilities to draw power unto itself. He became involved with the Tea Party as a way of protecting the values in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution for his children and grandchildren. Ben has grassroots organization and legislation experience from two years of leadership within the local and state levels in the Virginia Tea Party Patriots federation.
